I spoke to the head custodian at my school last night. He was cleaning up after the show. I thanked him and his staff for everything, because if it weren’t for them, none of it, or anything, for that matter, in my school, would really be possible. People at my school are disgusting in where they leave their garbage.
He said, “No, thank you. This is what makes my job enjoyable…seeing you kids do what you love, and for a great cause, too. This is when I love my job.” He turned away for a second. “Oh no, look at this, you’re making me all emotional. A 50 year old man crying in front a bunch of teenagers? It can’t happen!”
Most of the custodial staff are usually ignored. A man walks around the cafeteria every day pushing the garbage can, and people quite literally throw their trash at him and into the garbage without acknowledging him or even thanking him.
They don’t have the most pleasant jobs. It’s not their fault; they didn’t just choose that job for the fun of it. For the most part, especially in this economy, they didn’t have many other options, and just want to support themselves or their family.
The fact that this man still enjoys his job despite the way students at my school treat him really makes me think. He’s happy to scrape off fresh pieces of gum stuck below chairs so we can throw a benefit concert to fight brain cancer. He and the other custodians do not receive enough appreciation.
